안녕하세요 (ahn-nyoung-ha-say-yo)
Greetings…

Being a missionary in Korea…

It’s the strangest thing. I never thought that something I’ve grown up with my whole life would be
such a valued commodity.
How in the world did English become so prized? My wife Leiah and I are from the States and are on our first tour in the mission field.

As native speakers, we haven’t advantage of the blessings of this skill called English.
English has become a world language and more and more countries want to know it.
So… what does it mean to folks like you and me? It means that God is opening doors that
you can not imagine.
Just in May 2003 there were about 40,000 students attending SDA Language Institutes in Korea.
Tuition is not free. And SDA Language Institute is not the only company teaching English.
What this means is that you have a skill that is wanted by at least 40,000 people in May 2003
alone.

You may well ask, where’s the mission in teaching English? I’ve had the opportunity to meet Atheist, Buddhist, Agnostic, others and Christian.
Most of the people are not Christian. And every class, you have the opportunity to witness to many students about God. It can be as easy as placing an English Bible verse on the board, reading it together and then sharing how God will make His promises true. By the way…
teachers in Korea get mad respect (compared to the States.) So… what you say about Christ
and how you live Christ gets attention.

On top of all of that – you can preach and teach all the Bible the Lord allows you to handle. You can teach through singing, teaching, speaking, preaching, friendships… and the list can go on and on.

I won’t go into much of my past life before coming to Korea except for this short piece.
The Lord blessed me with a dream job in the states. It took good care of my family, and fulfilling, learned a lot, was fun, and was a Christian place to work. All in all –
it was the kind of job people dream about when looking for a job. However, even with all of that… my wife and I have never been happier in our lives then doing His work here in Korea.

If you’ve been praying for an opportunity to witness to someone, then consider the mission field, and the aforementioned and then act on it. Don’t keep praying for a sign. God won’t send you a sign when he has already given you evidence.
John 4:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

Join us in Korea… it’s a hoot.

In His service,
Mikaele Devoux
